The $650 million man
Friday, September 29th, 2006A disappointing Ryder Cup result won’t dethrone Tiger Woods as possibly history’s most effective product spokesperson, according to Ad Age magazine . See how the numbers add up:
*Tiger takes home an estimated $87 million annually from endorsement deals with Nike, American Express, Buick, Accenture, Tag Heuer and EA Sports.
*Tiger’s image has helped to make Nike Golf become “the fourth-largest equipment retailer in the $5.8 billion golf equipment market.”
*Tiger is the number one favorite sports star in America, according to the Harris Poll, a spot Michael Jordan has occupied since 1993.
*This year Tiger won five consecutive tournaments, recorded his 50th victory over 10 years and won his 12th major title.
*The PGA Tour has increased TV rights fees by more than 50 percent since Tiger won the 1997 Masters.
*The average age of a Buick driver has dropped from 65 to 55 since Tiger started as spokesman in 1999.
*EA Sports’ video game revenue has tripled since 1999, due in part to successful Tiger golf games.
*The number of golfers has increased five percent annually since Tiger turned pro.
All said, it is clear why Tiger has been dubbed the $650 million man. One can only hope it hasn’t gone to his head. Your turn to speak.
